Russian President's Envoy In Chechnya On Situation In Republic

With the problem of misplaced residents remaining the most acute one in Chechnya, the next two months will see the restoration of 15 hostels in the republic, said Vladimir Kalamanov, the Russian president's special envoy on observance of human rights and freedoms in Chechnya, at a press-conference in Moscow. The recent trip to Chechnya by PACE chairman Lord Judd has been also summed up, said Kalamanov. The only way toward normal life in the republic is improvement of living standards, said Kalamanov. He praised the work of 18 civilian and 7 military investigator offices as well as courts in Chechnya, qualifying it as "perfect". Plaintiffs have won some 127 cases, including 88 ones concerning wages, 15 complaints against servicemen, 8 suits on re-gaining jobs and 3 restoring one's right to former housing. Of 793 people registered as missing, 474 have been found.
