Doctors Warn Primorye against Ticks

In Primorye, doctors prognosticate early awakening of ticks, tiny Arachnida provoking tick-borne encephalitis, a grave disease that affects the brain and causes paralysis, and may result in death.

According to the territorial Vaccinal Prevention Centre, the first tick bites may be registered already in March. It is an early spring, and the ticks are beginning to wake up.

Epidemiologists say 84 people contracted tick-borne encephalitis in Primorye, Far East in 2002. 11 of them died. In all, the territory registers about 100 cases of tick-borne encephalitis every year. 8-13% of them are lethal.

Primorye has already launched a vaccine campaign against ticks.
