All law enforcement bodies of Russia's Southern Federal District, which includes Chechnya and its neighboring regions, were transferred to a re-enforced regime of service. Crowded places, life support facilities of towns and villages, and traffic centers were taken under special guard. Control was also re-enforced on administrative borders.
The local police leadership told RIA Novosti that it was connected with available information on possible terrorist acts by Chechen separatists. In this way they allegedly intend to "mark" the Fatherland Defender Day, celebrated in Russia on February 23, as well as a regular anniversary of the Chechens' deportation into the former USSR's eastern regions, carried out back under Stalin.
The operation named "Antiterror" will last until February 25.
