President Putin: peace process in Chechnya is inevitable

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has announced that peace process in Chechnya is inevitable.

The Chechen problem can be resolved in a radical way by giving Chechen people an opportunity to adopt their own Constitution and form legitimate government bodies, so that an ordinary Chechen could trust them and work together with the elected government in order to restore peace in Chechnya," the president stressed.

"This is the step we are going to take," the head of the Russian government pointed out in his interview with the Chinese Xinghua news agency and the Chinese television the day before his visit to China.

Moreover, "all armed people hindering the peace process will be made responsible or eliminated," according to Putin.

The President expressed the opinion that by next spring it would be possible to count on holding a referendum on the Chechen Constitution.

Putin also pointed out that "now there were no large-scale military operations in Chechnya, only separate terrorist acts, attempts to upset the peace process". However, this objective is hardly achievable for terrorists", Russia's President stressed.
