International conference on nuclear energy opens in Vladivostok

The international conference Ekoforum-2002, devoted to questions of nuclearenergy and disposal of nuclear waste, is opening in Vladivostok today. Thefour-day conference will be held under the aegis of the Russian NuclearEnergy Ministry. Over 150 Russian experts and about 60 foreign experts willattend the conference. Groups of participants of the conference areexpected to visit sites where nuclear waste is processed and buried. Thus,they will visit the Zvezda plant for repairing nuclear submarines, whichhas facilities for disposal and storage of liquid and solid nuclearwastes.During the conference, Primorsky Regional Governor Sergei Darkin will holda meeting with a representative of the Japanese government to discussinvestments in the regional industry to build new facilities for processingand disposal of nuclear waste. .
