Typhoon Fanfon brings torrential rains and strong winds to Central Kuriles

Though typhoon Fanfon has turned into an ordinary cyclone, it has nevertheless brought torrential rains and strong winds to the Central Kuriles.

The Maritime territorial weather centre reported on Thursday that the wind was still sufficiently strong with a maximum velocity of 25 m/sec, while wind gusts over straits and promontories reached 30-35 m/sec.

The typhoon drove the fishing fleet into quiet bays, throwing the seiner Schastlivy that had wound a fishing net around its propeller, onto rocks. Nobody was injured.

The repairs of communication lines torn by the cyclone in some places in the Central Kuriles are nearing completion. The cyclone will continue to move north-eastwards along the Kurile islands and will reach the south-eastern extremity of Kamchatka.

On Thursday the cyclone will reach the Maritime Territory from the West. In the morning it covered the western part of the Territory. Rains have already begun in some places, and will spread to the entire Maritime Territory.
