Lithuania Supports Russia's YUKOS Trying to Acquire Controlling Portion of Mazeikiu Nafta

During his meeting with Mikhail Brudno, the Vice President of Russia's YUKOS oil company, Algirdas Brazauskas, the Prime Minister of Lithuania, said his government could purchase the stock of Mazeikiu nafta but was not at all sure, if 'it would be advisable to take up responsibility for such an exhausted entity.

Yesterday, YUKOS officially notified the government of Lithuania of its intention to acquire the controlling portion of Mazeikiu nafta's stock and operator's rights at this time owned by the Williams International Company. The Russian and American companies have allegedly already agreed to this effect.

Operator's rights remain the principal issue for the Lithuanian government to decide. The Prime Minister Brazauskas further said, 'While agreeing to the acquisition by of Mazeikiu nafta's stock, we must find a solution allowing to preserve the interests of our country'.

After his meeting with Mikhail Brudno, Arturas Palauskas, Chairman of the Lithuanian parliament, positively assessed the possible acquisition by YUKOS of control over Mazeikiu nafta. He said, 'I believe we must agree to that. Especially because our parliament (Seim) has passed so many laws to allow this company to come here. This means, YUKOS is a reliable partner'.
