NATO expansion process

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Danish Prime Minister and President of the European Union, has declared that both NATO and European Union expansion plans will be complete by the end of the year, according to declarations made at the meeting of Baltic Heads of Government in Riga, Latvia.

He stated that “Europe will take these historic decisions during the second half of the current year in relation to the enlargement of the European Union and NATO”, adding that “These decisions will close one of the darkest chapters in the history of Europe”.

Mr. Rasmussen said that the three Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania could expect to become full members of NATO at the forthcoming Prague conference in November.
