Iraq: Weapons inspectors can return

Saddam sends letter to Kofi Annan

President Saddam Hussein of Iraq has sent a letter to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, stating that the weapons inspectors may return to Iraq provided they are accompanied by journalists, trade union officials and priests.

These independent observers are requested so prevent the weapons inspections being used as espionage missions, according to diplomatic sources. Saddam Hussein has also stipulated that he favours the majority of the team being composed of Europeans and requests the UNO to not allow the USA to veto the composition of the team.

Baghdad has recently claimed that it is a victim of unfair and unfounded rumours that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction and that such allegations are used by the USA as a foundation for a military attack.
