Georgia guarantees ecological safety of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline

We will guarantee the observance of ecological regulations during the construction and operation of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze announced in an interview with the national radio today. He called the construction of this pipeline one of his main goals and stressed that this project would promote allocations to the Georgian budget. The President also reported that international banking and financial institutions had already confirmed their plans to participate in the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan project, the Black Sea Press agency quoted Shevardnadze as saying.

Official documents on the establishment of the company Baku-Tbilisy-Ceyhan Pipeline were signed on August 2 in London. The signing ceremony was attested by representatives of the Azerbaijani, Georgian and Turkish governments. The structure of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline shareholders is as follows: British Petroleum (38.21 percent); SOCAR (25 percent); Statoil (9.58 percent); Unocal (8.90 percent); TPAO (7.55 percent); Eni (5 percent); Itochu (3.40 percent); Amerada Hess (2.36 percent); TotalFinalElf (5 percent).
