Malagasy Republic: Panic as outbreak spreads

Mystery virus claims more lives while hundreds show first symptoms

The death toll from the mystery virus in the Malagasy Republic has reached 153, according to the local Health Ministry.

The vuris has flu-like symptoms, with a strong headache, shooting pains in the neck and chest and pneumonia. 89 people have died in the village of Alakamisy Ambohimaha, 150 km. from the capital, Antananarive, while another outbreak 300 km. away has claimed 64 lives. Another 450 people are hospitalised with symptoms of the virus, which appeared two weeks ago.

Most of those who died tried herbal remedies instead of going to hospital. The health authorities are warning the population not to travel so as to keep the outbreak isolated while a public health plan is set in action.
