Scientists forecast strong earthquake in Russia's Far East

Seismologists forecast a powerful earthquake in the area of the Kurile Islands and the Kamchatka Peninsula.

The disaster can occur within October 5th, the Institute of Volcanic Geology and Geochemistry told RIA Novosti.

The earthquake can hit the region from the Kurile Island of Paramushir to the Shipunsky Cape in Kamchatka, Vladimir Shirokov, the institute's official, told a RIA Novosti correspondent. According to the forecasts of seismologists, the earthquake is expected to have 6.3 Force on the Richter scale.

However, populated areas will hardly suffer from the forthcoming earthquake, Shirokov said.

The forecast was made on the basis of the analysis of seismic data and the radon method.

These methods helped to forecast the earthquakes on March 1st and March 15th, 2002. The time, site and force of the earthquakes totally coincided with the forecasts.
