Rosoboronexport Concludes Contract for Delivery of Another Zubr Landing Ship for Greek Navy

On the eve of the opening in Athens of the 12th international exhibition of arms and military hardware of land forces, the Air Force and the Navy Defendory International-2002 the Rosoboronexport Russian federal state unitarian enterprise and the Ministry of National Defence of Greece concluded a contract on the purchase of another Zubr air-cushion landing ship for the Greek Navy.

Journalists were told this by press secretary of the exhibition's organising committee Efimius Petru. Describing the specifics of the present exhibition in Greece, he noted that the Russian exposition was oriented primarily to the needs of a vast programme of modernisation of the Greek armed forces till the year 2008. According to him, the concluded contract fully fits into this context.

According to Greek specialists, the two Zubr landing ships which were earlier supplied by Russia to the Greek Navy have made a good showing in the national defence structure of Greece.

The Zubr high-speed air-cushion landing ships can transport 500 people with full arms and are designed to land combat elements both onto a prepared and a non-prepared coast. These ships have powerful up-to-date arms and a mine-laying system. The ship's electronic equipment consists of up-to-date fire-control, navigation and communication systems, as well as effective means of radioelectronic struggle.

In expert opinion, this vessel holds great promise for its further export not only to Greece but also to other Mediterranean countries.
