Pakistan Elections

Close tie between PPP and PML-Q
As the count continues well into Friday, the first indications from Islamabad are that the new legislative assembly will have two main blocks, the Pakistan People’s Party of Benazir Bhutto and the pro-Musharraf PML-Q party.

In Pakistan’s first election since President Pervez Musharraf came to power in a military coup d’etat in 1999 there were allegedly many irregularities, according to international observers, whose report is being drawn up for presentation to the press.

President Musharraf says he will hand over executive power to the new prime minister around November 1st, but will retain the right to dismiss the PM and dissolve the legislative assembly.
