Brazil: Lula Far in Front

30 point lead for PT candidate

Luis Inacio Lula da Silva leads PSDB candidate Jose Serra by 30 percentage points in the latest opinion polls. The second round of the presidential election takes place on 27th October after the first round on October 6th saw Lula gain 46.4% of the vote, while Serra obtained 23.3%.

The Vox Populi opinion poll gave Lula 60% of the vote, compared to Serra’s 30%.Previously, Datafolha had given Lula 64%, over Serra’s 36%.

The governing coalition which supported Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s presidency has closed ranks behind Serra. However, decades of inept, corrupt rule has done little or nothing for Brazil’s people, who deserve better. They deserve a government which will respect them and return to them a modicum of human dignity. The right-wing parties have failed miserably to live up to expectations.

It is time for a change. It is time for Lula.
