Russia, Morocco sign fisheries cooperation accord

Moscow on Tuesday saw the signing of an agreement between the governments of the Russian Federation and Morocco on cooperation in the field of maritime fishing valid for three years, the Russian State Fisheries Committee told RIA Novosti. Committee sources detailed that the agreement signed sets out the terms of cooperation and fishing by Russian fishing vessels in the Kingdom of Morocco's exclusive economic zone.

Morocco will allow Russian fishing vessels to harvest various species of mackerel in the part of the Atlantic that it controls. The volumes of specific species harvested as well as the specific fishing areas and the number and type of Russian vessels allowed will all be identified by Morocco each year.

The document commits Russia to paying an annual financial compensation for the fishing authorization as a percentage of the output generated by Russian fishing vessels.

In addition, the two countries plan to develop cooperation in research necessary to preserve, recover, and rationally use the bioresources of Morocco's Atlantic fishing zone. Morocco and Russia will also cooperate in issues of fishing techniques and fish processing technologies, in the development of shipbuilding and ship repair, and by sharing expertise and training fish processing personnel.

To tackle practical cooperation issues and resolve any disputes over the treaty, Morocco and Russia agreed to create a mixed Russia-Morocco fishing commission, whose sessions would be held once a year in Russia and Morocco alternately.
