AvtoVAZ to Fulfill Exports Program Despite Stopping Main Assembly Line

AvtoVAZ will not reduce the volume of exports due to the stopping of the main assembly line, Vladimir Kuchai, AvtoVAZ vice-president for marketing, sales and maintenance of cars, declared. Moreover, the management of the automotive company is considering the possibility of increasing the volume of exports, which is 95,000 cars a year now, by 1,500-2,000 cars before the end of 2002, the company's press center reported.

Earlier AvtoVAZ planned to produce 770,000 cars in 2002, of which 100,000 were to be exported. Nonetheless, because of problems with sales of VAZ cars on the Russian market, it was decided to cease the operation of the main assembly line from October 26 until November 9 of this year, which will result in a decrease in the volume of car production by 27,000 units. AvtoVAZ made 767,300 automobiles in 2001.
