EU delegation visiting Kaliningrad region

The delegation comprising frontier, police, customs and military missions of EU countries has completed its study visit to the Kaliningrad region, the Joint Staff of the Russian Federal Frontier Service, FPS, reported on Friday.

The situation around the Kaliningrad region makes it necessary to establish and intensively develop contacts between frontier services of Russia and EU countries, the FPS believes. The study of measures used by Russian frontier guards to ensure the border will help their foreign colleagues to better understand the Russian stand on the Kaliningrad problem, a Joint Staff representative pointed out.

EU representatives expressed their interest in border cooperation with Russia, as "the overwhelming majority of border problems are connected with counteracting the common enemy, such as terrorism, drugs, illegal immigration and smuggling", he said. Russian frontier guards and their foreign colleagues believe that consideration of interests of Russia and its bordering countries will allow to use efficiently "both the forces and means of Russian frontier guards and the opportunities of its neighbours." The EU delegation arrived in the Kaliningrad region on October 14th to study the activities of the FPS regional department. It is the fifth visit of foreign guests to the Russian state border over the past two years. EU representatives have already visited the Chechen-Georgian border, Russian-Azerbaijani border, the FPS border group in Tajikistan and the Russian-Norwegian border.
