Russians buy less alcohol and cigarettes

 

According to Rosstat, the Russians began to buy less alcoholic beverages and tobacco.

The decline in food retail turnover in Russia in June accelerated, resulting in lower sales of food in the second quarter the first time in recent years, representatives of Rosstat said.

In June 2014, the turnover of trade in food, beverages and tobacco decreased by 1.2 percent compared to the previous year - to 994.2 billion rubles.

Food sales began to decline in May (by 0.3 percent). The decrease was the first in several years: since 2009, the monthly dynamics of the Russian retail sector has been positive. Negative figures were recorded in December 2009.

As a result, in the second quarter of 2014, food retail turnover fell by 0.1 percent - to 2 trillion 942.3 billion rubles.

In the first six months of the year, sales of food products increased by 0.5 percent, to 5 trillion 647.9 billion rubles.

The turnover of trade consumer goods in January-June was growing at a faster pace (by 4.4 percent, to 6 trillion 285.1 billion rubles).

In general, retail turnover in Russia increased in the six months by 2.7 percent (up to 11.933 trillion rubles). In June, the growth was 0.7 percent.
