Mozambique grows in stature

President Joaquim Chissano that Africa does not have to destroy itself, only to later begin the reconstruction process declared in the opening ceremony of the Summit which is a prize to Mozambique for the great strides the country has taken after securing lasting peace. The path to development and prosperity is well under way.

The Southern African countries had to learn “the hard way” what is the path to prosperity, declared the President of Mozambique, adding that peace must be reached and cherished if a country wants to consolidate the reforms it needs to leave the spiral of poverty. “We should not destroy ourselves first, only to then begin a reconstruction process...In other words, bearing in mind the long history of conflict in this region, sometimes of a racist nature, we do not want the political and economic reforms that we need to be paid with new conflicts”, he pointed out.

For Chissano, democracy and good government are the two keys towards prosperity, witness of this being the holding of regular free elections, the setting up of commissions which deal with human rights issues and electoral acts, and anti-corruption offices working unhindered to regulate how the society is being run.
