Bus overturns in Ukraine due to failed breaks, killing six

A bus traveling on the Crimean peninsula in Ukraine overturned when its brakes failed, killing six people and injuring 46, emergency officials said Tuesday.

The bus, which was traveling to Yalta from Uman, crashed late Wednesday near the Black Sea resort of Alushta, the emergency situations ministry said in a statement.

The crash occurred in the same place where 17 people were killed in a bus accident three years ago. A wall constructed after that accident prevented the bus from falling into a ravine.

Of the 46 people injured Wednesday, 26 were hospitalized, including 11 children, the statement said.

Also Wednesday, four people were killed and five were injured in a car collision on the Crimean peninsula, the ministry said. The accident occurred when the driver of one car lost control of his vehicle, it said.
