Road accidents in Iran bring 33 victims

At least 21 people were killed Friday and another 12 injured in three separate road accidents in Iran.

In the most serious one, at least 11 passengers died when a car collided with a bus on the road connecting Miandoab to Oroumieh, some 600 kilometers (373 miles) northwest of the capital Tehran. Eleven injured passengers were taken to local hospitals.

Four people were killed in a second accident when two cars crashed near Chaldoran, 880 kilometers (547 miles) northwest of Tehran.

In the third accident, also involving two cars, six passengers were killed near Khoramabad, 500 kilometers (311 miles) southwest of Tehran. One person was injured.

Iran has one of the worst road safety records in the world. More than 26,000 people lose their lives in road accidents every year. The toll is blamed on unsafe vehicles, disregard for traffic rules and inadequate emergency services.
