Palestinian president to choose new prime minister

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to pick a new prime minister later Friday.

Abbas was meeting with senior Fatah and PLO officials at his headquarters on Friday to discuss possible nominees, said his aide, Nabil Abu Rdeneh.

"Consultations on forming the emergency government are under way, and in the next few hours, we'll see a new prime minister chosen," he said.

On Thursday, Abbas declared a state of emergency and fired Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas, after the Islamic militants seized control of Gaza by force. Abbas also dismantled the Hamas-Fatah coalition, which had been formed in March in an attempt to end the bloody power struggle between the two rivals.
