Suspicious devices found in building cause high school evacuation

A New Jersey high school was evacuated Wednesday morning after suspicious devices were detected in the building, one day before final exams.

The Passaic County Sheriff's Department 's bomb squad removed the devices from Wayne Valley High School and took them to a safe area for disposal, department spokesman Bill Maer said. He had no immediate information on whether they were explosive.

"It is under investigation," Maer said. "We consider this very serious."

Such scares have become more sensitive issues with authorities in the years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The massacre of 32 people on the Virginia Tech campus earlier this year put school officials across the United States on guard even further.

"In the post 9-11 world, the federal and state authorities are contacted and involved in any serious issue that involves either homeland security or, for that matter, school safety," Maer said.

Final exams at the school were scheduled to begin Thursday and classes to end for the summer on June 21.

The school is located 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of New York City.
