Roof collapse in Indian market, at least three people killed

At least two people were killed and dozens more feared trapped when a concrete roof collapsed in a busy market in northern India.

Two bodies were recovered from the debris in the main grain market in the city of Chandigarh, said deputy commissioner of police R.K. Rao.

At least seven other badly injured people were rescued, said Rao, who was leading rescue operations at the scene.

The market was crowded when the heavy concrete roof came crashing down. Hundreds of people scrambled around, pulling at the large chunks of masonry with their hands, trying to free those trapped beneath.

It was not immediately clear what caused the structure to fall, but building collapses are frequent in India where construction is often hastily done with little regard for safety regulations.
