Sixteen people and 13-age girls were killed and 8 wounded when the truck carrying them crashed into another truck south of Cairo, officials said Wednesday.
It is not uncommon for people to ride at the back of trucks in Egypt, where police estimate that at least 6,000 are killed every year in car accidents primarily caused by bad roads, lax enforcement of traffic laws and reckless driving.
The eight wounded in Wednesday's crash, who included five more teen-age school girls, were taken to hospital, said the police officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.
