Rescue teams called off their search Monday for people who may have been buried by an avalanche at Russia's best-known ski resort that killed a 10-year-old boy.

The search was suspended because of the danger of more avalanches at the Krasnaya Polyana slopes, emergency authorities said.

Initial reports after the Sunday avalanche said as many as four people may have been swept away when it struck a ski-lift. However, officials said Monday that no tourists had been reported missing.

Authorities said the boy's father saw him be engulfed by the avalanche; the child was pulled out still alive but died in a hospital, reports AP.

Krasnaya Polyana is one of the areas proposed for snow sports in Russia's bid for the 2014 Olympics.
