A routine police background check of a man who applied for a job as a Santa Clause led to his arrest on a 28-year-old child rape charge, a court heard Friday.
Raymond Wayne O'Brien, 51, pleaded guilty in the Victoria state County Court Friday to a charge of raping an 11-year-old girl in the state capital Melbourne in 1977.
Police had charged him that year but he absconded. O'Brien was arrested in neighboring New South Wales state last year after applying to work as a Santa Clause, reports AP.
Applicants for jobs dealing with children in that state must submit to police checks of their criminal records.
He faces a prison term of up to five years when he appears for sentencing on Dec. 11.
