Russian aircraft crashes in Ukraine - 171 dead

Eye witnesses see the plane in flames 50 km from Donetsk. The Russian aircraft was a TU-154 travelling from the Russian resort of Anapa on the Black Sea to St. Petersburg.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed that the aircraft had 171 passengers and crew. The Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency Situations has confirmed that there was great turbulence in the area, that the aircraft caught fire at 10.000 metres and that the pilot stated he was going to perform an emergency landing after issuing an SOS.

The aircraft crashed minutes after the SOS. There were 39 children on board.
