Britain: train packed with commuters derailed in Liverpool, police no injuries reports

A peak-hour train packed with commuters derailed in the northwest England city of Liverpool, British transport police said today. No injuries were reported.

The underground train, thought to contain about 90 passengers, came off the track as it traveled toward the city's Central Station at about 6 p.m (1700 GMT), police said.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said all passengers had been removed from the train and there were no reports of injuries, apart from a couple of people who suffered panic attacks.

She said the derailment, which happened between Moorsfields and Central Stations, appeared to have been caused by a mechanical fault.

British Transport Police said the accident happened at a low speed.

Merseyside Fire Service dispatched a search and rescue team to the scene of the accident and officers assisted passengers off the train and through the underground tunnel.
