Guatemala: Hurricane Stan killed more 500 people

Volunteers dig for victims with their hands in devastated villages after Hurricane Stan passes. A slide may have killed as many as 1,500.

Rescue workers pulled bodies Saturday from Guatemalan villages devastated by mudslides, and other volunteers used hand tools, machetes and their bare hands to dig for more victims as the aftermath of Hurricane Stan continued to wreak havoc across northern Central America.

Guatemalan officials said 508 people had been killed and 337 others were missing in the country as a result of flooding and mudslides caused by the hurricane that roared across the region last week. More than 100 other deaths have been reported in Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, the Los Angeles Times reports.
