Fourth earthquake hits California this week

Just hours after a moderate &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/accidents/ 21/97/385/14768_tsunami.html ' target=_blank>earthquake shook most of Southern California, a strong quake struck off the state's northern coast to become the fourth significant shaker to jolt California this week.

Neither quake Thursday caused serious damage. One person was injured. A 6.4-magnitude temblor hit about 125 miles off the coast of Eureka around 11:30 p.m., rattling the ocean floor. In the afternoon, a 4.9-magnitude quake struck east of Los Angeles, startling people and knocking items off shelves and desks, tells the Guardian Unlimited.

The most recent quake occurred at 9:42 p.m. on June 16 local time, 193 kilometers (120 miles) out in the &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/accidents/2001/12/17/23779.html ' target=_blank>Pacific Ocean from Ferndale, and 482 kilometers from San Francisco City Hall, the geological monitor said on its Web site. The land-based tremor had a magnitude of 4.9, and struck San Bernardino County near Yucaipa, 71 miles east of Los Angeles at 1:53 p.m., reports Bloomberg.
