One dead, two injured in an Indonesian earthquake

An &to=http://english.pravda.ru/world/2002/07/11/32286.html' target=_blank>earthquake caused a wall to collapse on Indonesia's Bali island today, killing one person and injuring two others, witnesses and media reports said.

The quake struck in the late afternoon and was felt across a large swathe of the densely populated tourist island, witnesses said.

El-Shinta radio reported that a wall collapsed close to the island's provincial capital, Denpasar, killing one person and injuring two others.

Authorities were not immediately available to confirm the report. The strength and exact location of the quake were not immediately known, informs The Australian.

According to Scotsman, Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago nation, is prone to &to=http://english.pravda.ru/world/2003/03/10/44188.html' target=_blank>earthquakes because of its location on an arc of volcanos and oceanic trenches encircling the Pacific Basin.

The Meteorological and Geophysics Agency in Jakarta said the earthquake measured 5.5 on the Richter scale. Officials said the epicenter was near Denpasar, the island's capital.

"People rushed out of their homes, they panicked. The quake was very strong and lasted a long time," said Jumadi, head of the geophysics agency in Denpasar.

He said there had been no reports of any serious damage.
