Over 16 tons of drugs seized nationwide in first six months 2004

In the first six months 2004 the Federal Service for Control of Turnover of Drugs and Psychotropic Substances confiscated over 16 tons of narcotics, the Board of the Service declared on Tuesday.

"All in all we seized 980 kilograms of heroin, 30 kilograms of cocaine, over four tons of marijuana, over 1,400 kilograms of poppy straw, over 500 kilograms of hashish, and 60 kilograms of opium," the spokesman for the drug watchdog said.

According to him, the Service has also confiscated over 26 tons of various poisons and nine tons of raw components of drugs.

In the first six months of 2004, 37,000 criminal proceedings were launched, with 7,808 cases against 9,436 individuals sent to court; in the last six months of 2003 only 14,390 such cases were launched.

The drug watchdog's latest major successful bite came on July 23 in Moscow when the drugs police seized a channel of trafficking ephedrine-containing substances into Russia. Ephedrine is a drastic medicine used in professional sports to burn down fat and prohibited in Russia as well as in many other countries.

According to the Moscow office of the drugs service, sports products made by Dymatize, U.S., were imported illegally with subsequent wholesale to sports food shops in Moscow and throughout the Central Federal District.

During the operation, the police have seized 799 cans of Dymatize Ignite of 100 capsules each, all worth about $55,000, and documents related to illegal supplies and sale of the product.
