In Chechnya: attack prevented, one militant captured, another killed

A terrorist attack was prevented in the Vedeno district of Chechnya, the regional headquarters for antiterrorism operations in the North Caucasus reported.

According to a representative of the headquarters, during a search operation near the Tsa-Vedeno settlement in the VendenO district a 120 mm mortar enhanced with 400 grams of TNT was found on the side of a road. The land mine was destroyed at the location and an investigation into who planted the explosive has started.

The headquarters also reported that Magomed Akhmadov, a wanted militant, was detained.

According to the representative, he was detained yesterday at checkpoint 3 on Gerzilski bridge and is currently in a detention facility.

Law enforcement agencies said that Mr. Akhmadov may have been involved in some terrorist attacks.

Members of Munayev's and Bugayev's rebel groups in the Achkhoi-Martan district of Chechnya are negotiating through relatives to surrender their weapons, the headquarters reported.

According the representative, a number of insurgents, "are negotiating through relatives the conditions for them to surrender their weapons and leave the illegal armed formations."

Chechnya's Interior Ministry reported that when police attempted to arrest a militant he resisted and was killed.

According to the ministry, yesterday in the Samashki settlement in the Achkhoi-Martan district an active member of an illegal armed group opened fire at criminal investigators and a patrol policeman when they attempted to arrest him. The rebel was killed by return fire and police found a TT pistol in his possession.
