Money stolen from US instructor centre in Georgia

A safe containing a hefty sum of money has been stolen from an accountant's office of the Krtsani training centre' one-storey building in Georgia where US instructors have been employed to train Georgian servicemen, reported Georgia's military prosecutor-general David Kalmakhelidze.

That the 80-kilo safe, with 235,204 laris ($1 equals about two laries), $29,670 and jewellery worth $5,500, was fastened to the floor by an iron chain did not stop the robbers, said David Kalmakhelidze. He added that the centre's security involved Georgian defence ministry units, the centre's personnel-both Georgian and American, and private detective bureau agents.

Several versions are under investigation, reports the Novosti-Georgia news agency. It is not ruled out that the theft could have been masterminded by criminals in complicity with the accountant's office employees.

Criminal proceedings have been started.
