More than 3300 people killed by AIDS in Russia in January-May 2003

At the end of May 2003 there were 241,266 registered HIV victims in Russia and 3303 people had officially died of AIDS. As a Rosbalt correspondent reports, this was announced by President of the Russian Academy of Medicinal Sciences Valentin Pokrovsky while speaking at a parliamentary assembly in the State Duma. The official statistics, he stressed, 'do not reflect the real situation with the spread of AIDS in Russia.' For example, it has been estimated that there may be up to 1-1.5 million HIV-infected Russians who the health authorities still do not know about.

According to the World Health Organisation there are 42 million HIV victims in the world today. 3.1 million people have died from AIDS.
