Russian frontier guards prevent attempt to cross Tajik-Afghani border

On Thursday night, Russian frontier guards prevented two armed offenders' attempt to cross the Tajik-Afghan border, the press service of the Russian frontier group in Tajikistan has informed RIA Novosti.

At the hard-of-access part controlled by the Khorogsky frontier group /350 km south-east of Dushanbe/ frontier guards saw two offenders coming from Afghanistan, who during the detention opened fire against the guards.

During the clash one offender was killed, the other managed to escape to Afghanistan using darkness to his advantage. Searching operations are being conducted at the clash site.

On Thursday morning, frontier guards of the Moscow frontier group found a cache with 50 kg of high quality heroin made in Afghanistan. Accordingly, in January-May 2003 Russian frontier guards confiscated over 1,500 kg of heroin on the Tajik-Afghan border. A total of about 1,200 kg of this strong drug was confiscated over the same period in 2002.
