The Iraqi army and local defence forces have destroyed 5 tanks belonging to the US-led coalition during ferocious fighting for Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown. This was announced today by representatives of the Iraqi Information Ministry. They said that US and British troops had been forced to withdraw.
The Pentagon has categorically denied this report, saying instead that about 30 soldiers belonging to the Baath party militia, which forms Saddam Hussein's personal bodyguard, have been killed near Tikrit.
US President Joe Biden and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al Qadimi signed an agreement on July 26 to formally end the USA's military presence in the country by the end of the year
