Igor Ivanov: U.S. Runs a Risk Insisting on Immediate War Against Iraq

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov told in his article published in The Washington Post that an immediate start of the war on Iraq is not well grounded and is "fraught with serious risks, including for the US itself." The minister emphasized that under the pressure of the international community the process of disarmament in Iraq "became a reality" and that Russia in many respects contributed to Baghdad giving its consent to unconditional return of the inspectors on September 16 last year.

Moscow "sought and will seek full cooperation on Iraq's part in fulfilling all demands by UNMOVIC and the IAEA," the Russian foreign minister said. In his words, advocating a political settlement of the situation around Iraq, Russia is seeking "not only the resolution of this crisis, but also the creation of conditions to continue international efforts to overcome other, no less acute, global problems."
