Moderate quake strikes China's south-west, 14 killed

43623.jpegAt least 14 people were killed and 157 injured after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Yingjiang county in south-western China near the border with Myanmar on Thursday, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Three aftershocks of 4.7 magnitude jolted the region within ten minutes of the first tremor and the provincial Governor urged local authorities to investigate casualties and economic losses as well as to extend all possible help to those injured.

The quake was epicentered at Shiming village, about two kilometers away the county center, RTTNews reports.

According to reports, some houses have collapsed and there were reports of people buried in debris.

Meanwhile, China Earthquake Administration has initiated a grade III emergency response.

Military personnel and team of experts, headed by an official with the administration's emergency relief bureau, were on their way to the scene, according to Sify.
