Roadside Bomb Kills 21 Including Children in Afghanistan

A roadside bomb killed 21 people, including women and children, and wounded five others in Afghanistan, said Zahir Azimi, an Afghan Ministry of Defense spokesman.

The attack took place in the Sangin district of Helmand province where U.S., British and Afghan forces have been battling Taliban militants, CNN International reports.

"A tractor full of civilians ran over a mine in Darvishian village of Garmsir district at 11:00 a.m. local time Wednesday as a result 21 people including children were killed and six others injured," a senior military commander in the region Shir Mohammad Zazi told Xinhua.

He did not say who is responsible for the incident, Xinhua reports.

It was one of the deadliest bombings in weeks and comes with Afghanistan buffeted by soaring insurgent attacks and suffering record levels of violence in the eight years since the 2001 US-led invasion ousted the Taliban regime, AFP reports.
