Residents of New York State mark ten years of clean indoor air

This week marks the 10th anniversary of New York State's Clean Indoor Air Act, which prohibits smoking in all indoor workplaces, including restaurants and bars. While smoking cessation advocates are celebrating the anniversary, they also say there is more to be done to protect public health, says WAMC.

Early on, there was fierce opposition to this law and many stated it would be the end of the bar and restaurant business in New York, reports The Daily News Online.

The American Cancer Society says thousands of lives were saved as smokers were prompted to quit and as waiters and other workers were no longer subjected to hours of secondhand smoke each day. Even restaurants and bars quickly recovered after an early loss in business, according to CNYcentral.com.
