Number of cholera-infected people in Haiti may reach 200,000

42468.jpegThe death toll from the deadly outbreak of cholera in Haiti has risen to over 1,300 as the number of infected people edges closer to 60,000. International health officials have estimated that the disease could infect up to 200,000 as they battle to contain and reverse the tide.

The United Nations said it had received a fraction of the $164 million it had requested to help fight the outbreak.

Spokesman Farhan Haq said in New York yesterday that the less than 10% of that sum received so far was :" clearly insufficient for an adequate response to the epidemic", NewsTime informs.

"Cholera is virtually everywhere in the country," said Jon Kim Andrus, deputy director of the Pan American Health Organization.

"Cholera is a game changer in the most fundamental sense. It is an immediate and critical crisis that requires all hands on deck in response," said Melinda Miles, executive director of the group Let Haiti Live.

Four isolated cholera cases have been found in the neighboring Dominican Republic and two in the southern U.S. state of Florida, Vancouver Sun says.
