Bay Area janitors end strike, reach agreement

Service Employees International Union (SEIU) announced Wednesday that Bay Area janitors’ strike was finally ended after reaching an agreement over a four-year contract.

After a week-long strike against 16 cleaning firms when 180 janitors walked off the job at Bishop Ranch office park in San Ramon (by the end of the strike the number of janitors reached 1,000), they were set to return to work.

The cleaning firms are Acme Building Maintenance/GCA Services Group of Alviso, Able Services of San Francisco, ABM Janitorial Services of San Francisco, Brilliant General Maintenance Inc. of San Jose, Customized Performance Inc. of San Jose, Diamond Contract Services Inc. of Burbank, DMS Facility Services of Monrovia, ISS Facility Services of Denmark, Little Giant Building Services of San Francisco, One Source of Atlanta, Pacific Building Maintenance of San Diego, Service by Medallion of Mountain View, Service Performance of San Jose, Somers Building Maintenance of McClellan, Union Building Services Inc. of New Jersey, and United Building Maintenance LLC of Union City.

Under an agreement about 6,000 janitors in the Bay Area will get $1,250 a year and improved access to family health care. Waiting periods for family health care eligibility will be reduced from 30 months to 18 months by the end of the contract.
