In a New York raid by Law Enforcement, two 2 mosque leaders were arrested

From the news wire of Associated Press, Law Enforcement has arrested 2 mosque leaders in a sting operation, on 5 August 2004.
The two men are being charged with them with aiding in a purported plot to buy a shoulder-fired grenade launcher to assassinate a Pakistani diplomat.  The murder of the diplomat supposedly was meant to punish the Pakistani government for cooperating with non-Muslims.

To complicate the matter it is also alleged that a convicted felon created the story to try and convince authorities to give him a reduced prison sentence when he was found guilty of document fraud.  This would remove the charge of conspiracy to commit murder.

The main charges against the men now stands at money laundering, conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to conceal material support for terrorism.

According to the FBI affidavit, one of the two men approached the FBI informant in the summer of 2003 about getting a fraudulent New York driver's license. In subsequent meetings, the informant told the man that he imported weapons from China, the affidavit said.

Authorities said the men were paid $65,000 in checks and cash to purchase a shoulder fired missile and tried to disguise the source of the money involved.

Their hearing is set for next Tuesday.
