It is good for the resistance to keep the situation in Iraq unstable
News about explosions, armed clashes in Iraq has become rather frequent. A powerful car bomb blew up in front of the Imam Ali mosque in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf today. The precise number of victims is not known yet, not less than a hundred people were reportedly killed with the blast. Cleric Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim, Iraqi Shiite leader, is one of the victims of the explosion.
Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim chaired the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq. This organization was struggling with Saddam Hussein's regime for years, it had close links with Iran too. Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim was living in Iran for several years - he had to hide from the persecution of the Iraqi dictator's special services there. The cleric returned to Iraq only after the collapse of the previous regime. However, when Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim returned to Iraq, he demanded the immediate withdrawal of allied troops. Calling upon the struggle against occupants, the Shiite leader emphasized the struggle should be conducted peacefully. In fact, neither him nor his followers gave a lot of trouble to the US-led administration. On the other hand, American officials should have taken account of the Supreme Council's links with Iran. Furthermore, Iraqi Shiite leaders have repeatedly stated their aspiration to establish the Islamic Republic of Iraq. The creation of such a state is definitely not in Washington's plans.
It is hard to say for sure, who organized the act of terrorism in Najaf. The implication of American special services is not likely, because killing the Shiite leader would destabilize the situation in Iraq even more. On the other hand, the British television company Sky News announced the reason of the today's explosion quickly, which was rather suspicious: the struggle between Iraq's Shiite groups to control the oil industry.
It is worth mentioning, the distribution of ministerial positions in the future interim government of Iraq has started recently. Supposedly, a Shiite man is to take the position of the oil minister. However, the authorities of the minister, as well as the authorities of the whole government, remain unidentified. In any case, the authorities are not likely to be powerful, because Washington is not going to give the control over oil deposits to Iraqi officials, regardless of their religious status.
The latest explosion in Iraq was probably organized by Saddam Hussein's followers. It is good for the resistance to keep the situation in Iraq unstable. In other words, the more problems allied troops have, the better. In addition, the US-led administration in Iraq will have to face more problems.
