Seventeen Oil Fields Ignited by Iraqi Soldiers - 20 March, 2003

Seventeen oil fields in the South of Iraq were ignited by Iraqi soldiers today. As a Rosbalt correspondent reports, this has been confirmed by the Iraqi Defense Ministry. This is a preventative measure, according to the ministry, and is aimed at delaying the possible advance of US troops into Southern Iraqi territory.

Certain sources have said that the Iraqi government may have mined up to 52 of the largest oil fields in the country.
