Pregnant women may often deliver their babies by Caesarian section even if they do not have complicated pregnancies. Many people believe that this method of child delivery may have a negative influence on child’s health in the future. Is there any difference between infants delivered by Caesarian section and those born in a natural labor? And why is the operation called “Caesarian labor?” Amina Askhatova, an obstetrician, tries to answer these questions.
“Doctors always have good reasons to opt for Caesarian section. There are always reasons which make them choose this method of birth. The reasons may have nothing to do with the fact that a woman’s pregnancy was not complicated by anything. Labor is a totally different stage, and the body’s response to the onset of labor may be quite unpredictable.
In general, there is no difference between infants delivered by Caesarian section and those delivered in a natural labor. Caesarian section is a surgical operation for delivering a baby through the abdominal wall. Legend has it that the operation was first performed on the mother of Julius Caesar, hence the name. At the same time, Caesarian section may imply certain pathologies of the newborn.
“For instance, it should be noted that a baby delivered by Caesarian section may have intracranial hypertension. If the operation is performed during labor, it’s impossible to ensure a gradual transition of a baby into an environment where the pressure is a lot different to that in the womb. As a result, blood vessels of the brain are subject to a greater amount of stress during Caesarian section. Parents are strongly recommended to take their baby to a neurologist at the earliest opportunity, especially if they notice the baby cry in his sleep or if the baby’s chin or hands tremble while at rest. Your baby can be completely cured by the time he turns 12 months old provided that he starts receiving treatment at an early stage of this condition. Some infants delivered by Caesarian section may have dystrophic changes of the heart, and therefore such children should be examined by cardiologist.
“Other infants of the category may show signs of emotional unrest and hyperactivity. Their hemoglobin levels may be decreased. Such babies should be breast-fed by mother’s milk. Subsequently, they should receive proper nutrition including polyvitamins. They should be raised on the basis of a clear-cut regimen, in a well-balanced psychological ambient with sensibly applicable rules and patterns. You’d better bear in mind that this kind of children can be easily offended and hard to restrain.
“I’d like to stress the point that I’m not by any means trying to say that infants delivered by Caesarian section are subject to the above conditions. Infants born in a natural labor may have similar health problems as well. Regardless of a method by which they are delivered, all the children need parental love, care and guidance.”
