Kalmykia president Ilyumzhinov tends resignation

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, president of the Russian republic of Kalmykia, tended his resignation to Russian President Putin on Tuesday, a spokesman for the office of the Russian presidential envoy to the Southern Federal District.

The envoy, Dmitry Kozak, plans to consult the Kalmyk legislature and political parties and public associations in the republic on a possible candidate for Kalmyk president.

Ilyumzhinov was elected Kalmyk president in 1993 and was re-elected in 1995 and 2002, Interfax reported.
